Josh Maja should choose Tottenham Hotspur over Manchester City

Amidst the intense speculation surrounding the future of Josh Maja’s future, a host of clubs have emerged as potential destinations for the 20-year old Englishman.

A couple of days ago, Sunderland manager Jack Ross gave Maja an ultimatum, sign a new contract within a week or be sold in January. The offer tabled by Sunderland appeared to be attractive, £5000 per week, which is 7 times that of Maja’s current wages.

The aggressive stance of Ross to keep one of the Black Cats’ own, as well as wages offered, appeared to soften Maja as he indicated his interest to sign the new contract. However, in a twist of events, the signing was blocked by Maja’s agent, as reported by Sky Sports.

With the deadline up for Maja, it now seems inevitable that the talented young striker will leave the Stadium of Light, but where is the best destination for him to further his career?

Newcastle United

Sunderland’s fierce Wearside rival, Newcastle United, will table a £5 million bid for Maja, as reported by The Sun, as the Toons prepare to reinforce their attack.

However, a transfer to Newcastle may not be the most ideal destination for Maja.

The Magpies are currently in the midst of a takeover negotiation and while this may potentially signal more funds forthcoming for the club in the transfer market, the opposite could well be true with the new owners not willing to over-commit to a club battling relegation at the moment.

Newcastle currently sits 15th in the Premier League table, just 2 points off the bottom 3, with 21 matches played. If the Toons do get relegated, Maja will be playing in the Championship, and could also play against Sunderland, who are gearing for an immediate promotion from League One.

Newcastle also has plenty of strikers to choose from, boasting the firepower of Salomon Rondon, Yoshinori Muto, Joselu and Ayoze Perez, which may limit Maja’s playing time.

This is hardly the situation which Maja would want to find himself in, and it hardly suits his ambitions of playing at the top as well.

Crystal Palace

While the potential situation for Maja at Newcastle United looks grim, it is not that much better off for him at Selhurst Park as well, with The Sun reporting Crystal Palace’s interest in Maja as well.

The Eagles sit 14th in the Premier League, one position above Newcastle United, and 6 points off the bottom 3.

Just like Newcastle, Crystal Palace also has a list of strikers in their ranks, with Connor Wickham, Jordan Ayew and Alexander Sorloth currently available. Christian Benteke is also close to a return, and Maja may also have to fight hard for his place.

cben.PNGChristian Benteke is close to a return for Crystal Palace, increasing competition for the forward spot

Unlike the playing system at Sunderland where Maja operates as a lone forward, the Crystal Palace under Roy Hodgson prefers to play with 3 upfront, with Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha supporting the centre forward.

While this may mean more firepower support for Maja, it also means that only one striker plays at any time, with the other 2 positions on the flanks occupied by Townsend and Zaha, making Crystal Palace another less than ideal destination for Maja.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City

While there are a whole list of clubs which are also interested in Josh Maja, namely Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Bristol City, Leeds United, Burnley and etc., the two big clubs which have emerged as suitors for his signature are Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

So which of these two clubs would be the best move for Maja?

At first glance, City may be the rewarding club for Maja. He spent some time in City’s academy before joining Sunderland due to the Sky Blues’ unwillingness to offer him a scholarship.

However, if the list of strikers at Newcastle and Crystal Palace would cause Maja to rethink his decision to join them, then surely the situation at City is worse.

While Manchester City do not have as much centre forwards among their ranks like Newcastle and Crystal Palace, the competition for that spot at the Etihad Stadium is pretty much a two-way battle between Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, and it would take years before Maja can establish himself ahead of them.

sagj.PNGIt would be near impossible for Josh Maja to get ahead of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus at Manchester City

Just like Crystal Palace, Manchester City operates a three-man forward line, with Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez vying for the positions on the flanks to play alongside the centre forward.

This makes the competition even stiffer for Maja as he would have to get ahead of both Aguero and Jesus in order to play.

On the other hand, while Tottenham Hotspur may not be able to offer Maja the level of wages that City can, it would still be significantly higher than that of the rest of the clubs chasing his signature, and definitely higher than the £5000 per week offered by Sunderland.

Similar to Sunderland, Spurs typically plays with one man forward, mostly Harry Kane, a system that is familiar and suits Maja.

While Spurs still have Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen in their ranks, they are not trusted and are expected to depart the club in this January transfer window, allowing Maja to immediately enter as the second choice striker in the club.

The one man forward system at Spurs also mean that there are always opportunities for Maja to play alongside Kane in a two-forward system, be it in situations where Spurs have to chase the game or when Mauricio Pochettino just wants to break down the defence of the opponents.

hkane.PNGFancy Maja playing alongside Kane?

Spurs are also conveniently situated in the city of London, where Maja was born in, and this would definitely be a huge factor of consideration for the 20-year old.

Just like Manchester City, Spurs can also offer Maja Champions League football, and given Mauricio Pochettino’s reputation for developing youth players, Maja would find himself in good hands and even receive a Three Lions call-up and put on the England jersey.

Overall, in terms of location, wages and playing time, even from an unbiased point of view, joining Tottenham Hotspur will be the best choice for Josh Maja.

How Worth it is it to buy each Premier League’s Away and 3rd Kit?

We are now close to one-third of the 2018/19 Premier League season, and for some of you who have eagerly purchased all your club’s kits for this season, you may be left disappointed on match days as the away kit and 3rd kit will hardly feature.

Indeed, when we look at the breakdown of the Premier League fixture (ignoring European competitions, League Cup and FA Cup), the home kit definitely features the most.

tes.PNGFollow me on Twitter for more Spurs updates!

There are 38 matches for each Premier League club in every season, with 19 home games and 19 away games.

This means that the home kit of each club will feature at least 19 times in a Premier League season.

If we assume that each club then dedicate the remaining 19 away games to the away and 3rd kit respectively, the away kit should feature 10 times and the 3rd kit 9 times.

However, that is hardly the case as clubs still prefer to use the home kit for as many away games as they can, especially for derbies and matches against bigger clubs.

ies.PNGFollow me on Instagram for more in depth analysis!

If that is the case, the 3rd kit becomes redundant as the away kit itself will barely be featured, much less the 3rd kit. However, releasing 3 kits every season is profitable for clubs as one extra jersey purchased contributes more revenue.

For this season, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford did not release a 3rd kit as they are not in any European competitions and they are the only 2 clubs with a yellow home kit, thus, the colours would not clash with any clubs, and they can just use the away kit against each other.

In the 2015/16 season, Stoke City, then a Premier League club, traveled away to AFC Bournemouth, but as both their home and away kit clashed with Bournemouth’s red and black home kit, Stoke released a one-off white 3rd kit that is not available for purchase, thus, saving some money for their fans.

stoke3rd.PNGStoke City’s 2015/16 season one-off 3rd kit

Therefore, if clubs want to earn money off the 3rd kit from their fans, they should play with each kit several times in that season to ensure that the fans’ money are not wasted.

As of 22 October 2018, before match day 9 between Arsenal and Leicester City, each club would have played at least 10 matches across all competitions:

kitpercentage.PNG

However, as can be seen, some kits are still yet to feature (Tottenham Hotspur’s away kit, Liverpool’s away kit, Manchester United’s 3rd kit, Arsenal’s 3rd kit, Leicester City’s away kit, Newcastle United’s away kit, Brighton & Hove Albion’s 3rd kit, AFC Bournemouth’s 3rd kit).

Some of the kits that have yet to feature this season may have been used by the club in the pre-season tournaments or friendlies, but fans do not buy their club’s jerseys just for the pre-season.

This is an important point to note as if clubs expect more revenue from jersey sales but do not commit themselves to using them, fans will simply lose confidence and jersey sales for away and 3rd kits may just dwindle.

8 kits.PNGThe kits that are still not used in any competitions yet this season

For clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Leicester City and Newcastle United, the situation is even worse as their home kit is used for 90% and more of their matches played so far this season. That is more than Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford, which do not even have a 3rd kit.

Among clubs that are participating in European competitions this season, they would have played more matches than other clubs, but yet Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have only used 2 of their jerseys and have a home kit usage of 75% and more.

There is no excuse for the above mentioned 4 clubs as Manchester City, Chelsea and Burnley have all managed to rotate the use of each jersey, with Manchester City doing so the best with a home kit usage of only 58%.

To sum up, Premier League clubs are simply not doing enough to repay the support of their fans for buying their jerseys. As a Spurs fan, I remain increasingly disappointed that the club is not using its away kit even on away matches.

If that is the case, fans would simply be better off in buying just the home kit of the club that they support.

Match Preview: Tottenham Hotspur vs Cardiff City (Premier League)

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to make amends for their UEFA Champions League defeat against FC Barcelona when they take on Cardiff City in the Premier League today.

Spurs who were flying high domestically with 3 wins on the bounce, were brought down to earth by the Catalan giants, who coincidentally, were on a 3 games winless run. The defeat was harsh on the North London side which was missing 7 players through injury: Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Serge Aurier, Mousa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen, Luke Amos and Michel Vorm.

However, Vorm has been back in training and is expected to be on the bench to face Cardiff City today (3pm UK time) at the Wembley Stadium.

Everything Spurs Predicted Starting Line Up:

  • Due to the injury to Jan Vertonghen, Spurs is expected to start with a back 4 again.
  • Danny Rose is expected to come in for Ben Davies with no changes to the other 3.
  • Eric Dier, who was on the bench against FC Barcelona due to a shortage in option for both center-back and defensive midfield positions, is expected to come in for Harry Winks today.
  • The front 4 remains unchanged.
  • Michel Vorm is expected to replace Paulo Gazzaniga on the bench today.
  • Juan Foyth, who was not named in Spurs’ Champions League squad, is expected to be on the bench today in light of the injury to Jan Vertonghen.
  • Talented youngster, Oliver Skipp, may miss out as Spurs can name a full 18 matchday squad with Foyth back in the fold.
